When the South Providence Development Corporation (SPDC) purchased 17 Gordon Avenue in 1999, the building was vacant and decaying. Its original tenants – manufacturers of lead pencils – were long gone. The neighborhood had also deteriorated.
Through sustained efforts and community support, SPDC has transformed the building into the Gordon Avenue Business Incubator. The building has been brought into the 21st century – a time when South Providence is ready to shine again, a time when our local economy is driven by professional service-oriented businesses rather than hard labor, and a time when we have become more aware of our responsibility to the natural environment and the effect that the environment has on us.
